The Department will use Java as the first language in our courses starting Fall 2004. The transition will take a number of semesters to complete. The schedule currently is as follows:
Introduction to Computer Science: Java-based starting Fall 2004
Data Structures and Algorithms I: Java-based starting Spring 2005
Data Structures and Algorithms II: Java-based starting Fall 2005
Obviously other courses in the curriculum will need to be adjusted as students make progress towards their program of study. For example, Object-Oriented Programming is currently Java- and UML-based (among other topics.) Once students have completed DSAII using Java, the OOP course would be changed to take that background into account.
