PuTTY/SSH HOW TO

In order to login remotely to the network now with the increased security SSH must now be used. PuTTY is a free Windows based SSH client you can download at the PuTTY Webpage.
Once you have downloaded and run PuTTY, you need to setup a connection.

Setting up the connection is easy. In the Hostname box type in the IP address of the machine or the name of the computer in the format computername.cs.uakron.edu In this example knuth was used. Now under Protocol, SSH needs to be selected. Now in the Saved Sessions box enter the name you want to call the connection. The Hostname is a good name to use. Now click save so that the next time you use PuTTY you won't have to retype the computer name.

Now that the connection is in the Saved Sessions you can double click the name of the computer and the connection will be opened. The connection is highlighted in blue in the example picture.

Note: If this is the first time you connect to that computer this window will pop up just click YES and you won't be prompted again.

Now you should see the login prompt.
