Workshop for Teaching Undergraduate Bioinformatics through Collaboration and Inquiry

June 5 - 8, 2006

OVERVIEW: The University of Akron will host a 4-day workshop focusing on teaching undergraduate bioinformatics. The workshop is supported by an NSF grant for development of a stand-alone introductory bioinformatics course suitable for individuals or pairs of faculty at small to mid-size institutions.

The workshop will provide an overview of an existing course and cover key topics in bioinformatics. The workshop participants will have hands-on experience with the software used in the course. Classroom tested teaching materials will be provided and participants will be exposed to inquiry-based active teaching practices. Participants will experience several classroom-tested collaborative teaching modules.

The workshop topics will include a discussion of how to foster collaborative inquiry between biology and computer science students entering the class with very different academic backgrounds. We welcome faculty from multiple disciplines, especially teams of faculty members interested in collaborative teaching of introductory bioinformatics. Graduating PhD students who are interested in developing a course in bioinformatics are also encouraged to apply.

COST: This workshop is supported by the National Science Foundation. Room, board and workshop costs are free for all participants. Travel expenses are not covered.
