Choose Ohio First Scholarship in Bioinformatics OVERVIEW. The University of Akron has been awarded funding by the Choose Ohio First Program to provide about 12 undergraduate and/or graduate scholarships in bioinformatics. The scholarships are merit-based and to be awarded to academically talented students with an emphasis on academic excellence, leadership, and preparation for a future career in science and technology. Students who wish to apply may major in a range of academic disciplines that utilize computer science to manage biological data. The scholarship with a maximum size of $4700 per year is renewable each year and available from academic year 2008/09 through 2012/13.
ELIGIBILITY. Applicants must be residents of Ohio. Entering undergraduates should rank in the top of his or her high school graduating class and demonstrate academic merit. Transfer and returning undergraduates will be evaluated on their previous college record and statement of interest in the area. Prospective graduate students should have completed a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in a related field with a GPA of 3.0 or better, have a background in computer science and/or biology, and show promise in the area of bioinformatics.
SCHOLARSHIP OBLIGATION. Student recipients of a Choose Ohio First Scholarship in Bioinformatics are required to remain in good academic standing within their major with a GPA of at least 3.0, take at least one course related to bioinformatics, participate in research activities related to bioinformatics, and progress toward at least a minor in computer science or biology. The scholarship recipients are required to report their progress to their mentors regularly. In addition, the students are required to attend at least 3 bioinformatics seminars and write a short synopsis of each seminar in addition to a primary literature review of one seminar speaker’s paper. Toward the end of the year, the students are required to present their research results at UA Annual Conference on Graduate and Undergraduate Student Research, Great Lakes Bioinformatics Conference or other professional conferences.
